Help your child understand that planning and scheduling time for completing homework are important steps for meeting homework requirements. Ask your child to enter this week’s homework requirements into their diary, in the allocated homework times. First, list the week’s homework that’s been set by their teacher. Then diarise any project deadlines, and plan a timeline by breaking down the project into manageable parts.

List the major activities for each project and the estimated time it will take to complete them. For example, they will need time for research to get the information they need, time to summarise, analyse and synthesis the information to answer the questions, time to draft their project and finally time to revise it for submission. Diarise the steps required and the dates they must complete them by. Explain to your child how important it is to plan. Spreading the workload out over a period of time helps avoid feeling overwhelmed the night before a project is due.
